Periodontal disease (chronic inflammation of the soft tissues supporting your teeth) is one of the most common oral wellness challenges in our society. Since oral health affects many processes within the human body, it has a big impact on your overall well-being.
Most people will experience gum disease at some time during their lives. An estimated 95 to 98 percent of Americans, young and adult, start with gingivitis (simple inflammation of the gum tissue) before developing more serious mouth issues. Today we know that gum disease is a related cause of a variety of systemic illnesses such as diabetes, colon cancer, heart disease and conditions you might not expect, like premature birth risk.
Fortunately, it is extremely preventable. We know exactly what causes gum disease and we know how to stop it. We want to share those facts with every patient that comes into Villaggio Dental.
Gum disease is caused by bacteria. Everyone has bacteria in his or her mouth. But when the balance inside the mouth gets out of control the body is unable to fight off the infection. That’s when disease occurs. Gum disease can lead to bone loss around your teeth. While there may not be visible loss of bone immediately, as years go by inflammation causes the body to respond by removing the bone around the teeth. As that process continues, the teeth eventually become loose. The advanced stages of gum disease can become a painful and expensive condition to resolve.
Gum disease can be prevented by simply controlling the bacteria.
